The platform

Variety of content

SOMA (soma.lv) is the digital learning content platform of the Latvian educational publisher Lielvārds. It brings the publisher's materials together in one place: e-books, printable and interactive worksheets, methodological tools for teachers, interactive study topics, informative and scientifically accurate videos, educational and dynamic illustrations, self-test questions and exercises.

The content covers Latvian language, mathematics, natural sciences, physics, chemistry, geography and biology from preschool to grade 12. SIA Mitigate developed the platform for Lielvārds: the content library, accounts for pupils and teachers, and the tools with which teachers organise their work in it.

Access

Study from anywhere

The platform is accessible from any device - PC, smartphone, tablet and even a next-generation TV. Content is stored in a study cloud, so a pupil can open the same material at school, at home or on the go; all that is needed is an internet connection. Technically SOMA consists of a web application and a mobile app. The server side is built in Ruby on Rails: it holds the content library, user accounts, classes and assignments and serves the same data to every client. The mobile app for iPhone and iPad is built with React Native, which allows one codebase to serve both iOS and Android, so new features reach every pupil at the same time regardless of the device.

For teachers

Remote studies

One of the most important features introduced in SOMA is the ability to assign and complete study content on a single platform. Teachers import their class lists from the school management systems E-klase or Mykoob, start a remote lesson, assign specific tasks and record them in the pupils' diaries. Pupils complete the work in SOMA, the teacher sees how each pupil is progressing with the assigned tasks and can assess their work, and the results are passed back to the school register platform. This part of the platform, SOMA Klasei, became especially important in spring 2020, when schools in Latvia moved to remote learning and Lielvārds opened the platform free of charge for the duration of the state of emergency to pupils whose schools had no subscription.
